Calamus Root
$19
The calamus root is the long and branched rhizome of the perennial wetland plant known as Acorus calamus. The leaves and root of the reed-like organic Acorus calamus are known especially for their strong scent. The root has commonly been used for centuries in Europe and Asia as an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic.
The properties of organic calamus root are almost entirely due to its high volatile oil content. The fresh organic calamus root is pleasantly sweet with a bitterish and pungent taste. The root’s essential oil has been historically used as a perfume and aphrodisiac. It has been used variously in cultures as a psychotropic drug. Calamus root is versatile—classified as a nauseant, stomachic, aromatic, expectorant, carminative, antispasmodic and nervine sedative.
In Britain, the calamus root was traditionally used for all nervous complaints, vertigoes, headaches. It is listed in many herbal resources as a dyspeptic and the oil of organic calamus root has been used to treat flatulence and related bacteria.
Bulk organic calamus root is used widely in infusions and tinctures as a stimulant and tonic for increasing appetite. North American Indians chew calamus root as a stimulating tonic and for oral hygiene.
Organic calamus root has a long medicinal history, but due to its potent chemistry it should be used with care. Pregnant and nursing women should not use calamus root.
